Appeal- Swarna Gaddige Samarpane
Along with the ‘Shila Seva’ project for the construction of the new temple for the Goddess, which ensures maximum participation of all devotees in the temple construction, the ‘Swarna Gaddige Samarpane’ is the other project undertaken by the Committee. The Golden throne offering committee has been formed with the aim of creating a golden thron for the goddess, Maariyamma and for her sister Uchangidevi.
Swarna Gadduge: Why?
Maariyamma has no particular idol, deity, or form given inside the temple to confine her to one place. Between 1750 and 1799, when the Ugrani requested the Goddess, Maariyamma, that the place inside the fort was not adequate to perform her seva appropriately and as per customs, the Goddess agreed to be shifted to a new place of worship. This new place of worship gave people enough space to gather and worship her as per custom and ritual. In the beginning, she was worshipped once a week in this new place of worship, which is every Tuesday. On every Tuesday, people would gather and build a temporary shed and throne called ‘Gaddige’ for the goddess, and then after the rituals were performed, the shed was brought down. However, the new place where she was worshipped was a lowland area, or what was called 'palle-padpu', and water would accumulate during the rainy season in this area. In the year 1849, the temporary arrangement for the goddess was replaced with a permanent arrangement, and a ‘Gaddige’ was made for her to be seated in. Later on, in the year 1942, the Gaddige was consecrated at a new temple built for her, which is the Hale Maariamma temple.
Therefore, the rituals and customs that are followed while worshipping Maariyamma in the temple are very different when compared to the poojas performed in any other temple of goddesses. The pooja was in the earlier years done only to her throne, which is her seat, the ‘Gaddige’. As the years passed, it was believed that a ‘kalasha’ or a pot was kept on the throne or the gadding and worshipped. At the end of the day, this pot was emptied, and the process was called ‘kalasha visarjana’.
Hence, pooja is performed to the ‘Gaddige’ with the throne, and so ‘Gaddige pooja’ is very sacred to the goddess. In other words, the worship of the throne, the ‘Gaddige’, is far more important than the worship of the idol.
In the newly constructed temple of the goddess, on the 2nd of March, 2025, the divine throne of the goddess, Maariyamma, will be consecrated. This will be followed by the Brahmakalashotsava (grand consecration ceremony). Many devotees have already been offering gold and silver as offerings to the goddess for the fulfilment of their wishes and appeals to the Appe. Not every devotee, however, gets the opportunity to offer gold to the Gaddige, the making of the divine throne of the goddess. The goddess is believed to bless the devotees whenever they offer her gold. This is one-lifetime opportunity for all devotees to offer gold to the making of the golden throne of Kapu-da-appe.
PS: Gold can be accepted only at the Gold offering ceremony and the temple and will not be accepted officially anywhere else
